Komet Overview
Komet is the authoring and transformation environment within IKE, designed to let experts create, refine, and share healthcare knowledge in a way that is accurate, reusable, and standards-aligned. It integrates existing sources like SNOMED CT®, LOINC®, RxNorm, and GUDID with new inputs, giving users the ability to import, structure, extend, and export content in formats that fit their systems. By reducing redundant work and minimizing errors, Komet ensures knowledge can flow seamlessly across applications to power decision support, strengthen data quality, and enable better outcomes across the healthcare ecosystem.
What Komet Can Do
Komet provides various capabilities for importing, transforming, extending, and exporting content into a common model:
What is Komet?
Komet is an open-source environment designed to manage, harmonize, and extend disparate knowledge standards, which enables users to import, transform, extend, and export content into a common model.
Komet Use Cases
Komet provides several benefits to a wide range of stakeholders throughout the healthcare ecosystem.
Terminology Management
Use Komet to author, curate, and maintain terminology assets by bringing together SNOMED CT®, LOINC®, RxNorm, GUDID, and other sources into a consistent, reusable knowledge base.
Cross-Standard
Knowledge Creation
Build new knowledge artifacts that connect across multiple standards, making it easier to describe medical products, lab tests, and clinical data in ways that are consistent and interoperable.
AI and LLM Enablement
Ground large language models in structured, standards-aligned knowledge to improve accuracy, reduce hallucinations, and provide trusted answers in regulatory,
clinical, and research contexts.
Regulatory & Policy
Support
Generate reusable, validated data elements and mappings that help agencies align policies, improve compliance monitoring, and reduce duplication of effort.
Clinical & Public Health Decision Support
Enable decision-support systems to draw on harmonized knowledge, improving the consistency of test coding, medication records, and device data used in patient care and public health surveillance.
Knowledge Sharing
& Reuse
Export interoperable artifacts that others can adopt, adapt, and extend, which in turn helps redundant work and accelerate collaboration across research, industry, and government.
Before You Download Komet …
Before you can use Komet, you’ll need to download a few prerequisite components. These downloads are required to get Komet up and running, but please note that this step does not include downloading Komet itself.
The Developer Onboarding Guide provides Java developers information and instructions to gain the necessary permission and access to the various repositories, tools, and resources that are required to submit code, bug fixes, and other GitHub actions.
The IKE Starter Data is a foundational dataset that provides consistency and lays the groundwork for development in Komet.
